  • Overview

    As an Electrical Engineer I, Energy-Based Devices at Solta Medical, the successful candidate will help create our next generation of world-leading energy-based aesthetic products. S/He will conceive, design, and bring products into production that defines the industry. As a member of Solta’s technical staff, the Electrical Engineer I is expected to assist with innovative technical solutions using their knowledge and experience of Electrical Engineering.   Specifically, to assist the Energy-Based Devices department in the R&D of current/future devices, which are based on electromagnetic and mechanical energy (i.e. RF, Optical, Lasers, and Ultrasound).

     
    The successful candidate will implement conceptual/product designs for performance, innovation, reliability, and cost. S/He will not only conceptualize solutions, but follow through with detailed design supervision, prototyping, testing, supplier management, and documentation. S/He should have strong written and verbal communication skills and openness to working in a team environment.

     

    Reports to:  Energy-Based Devices Manager/Principal Engineer

    Responsibilities

    Principle Responsibilities and Duties:

     

    Note: The following are meant to be representative but not necessarily all inclusive of the duties and responsibilities for this position title.

    • Define electrical architecture and generate requirements for Class II medical devices.
    • Design, simulate, and debug analog and digital circuits incorporating FPGAs and microcontrollers for ultrasound, RF and optical energy measurement and control.
    • Design of test equipment for the evaluation of electro-mechanical devices.
    • Assist Manufacturing and Service departments in reliability and failure analysis investigations and solutions.
    • Support animal and laboratory studies of prototype systems for feasibility studies.
    • Assure compliance of equipment to IEC medical device standards (60601-1, 60601-1-2, etc).
    • Document and maintain code and board designs.
    • Conduct failure mode, Safety, and Hazard analysis and document new and legacy device designs.

    Qualifications

    Qualifications:

    • BSEE degree required.  One to two years of experience in electrical engineering is highly desirable.
    • One to two years of demonstrated experience in a research medical device development environment, preferably on energy-based sources (e.g., RF, light-based solutions)
    • Candidate must have some experience with system-level electrical design and integration.
    • Demonstrated aptitude in design best practices.
    • Strong communication skills required for specifications, products/applications documentation including design traceability and verification and validation plans.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced multidisciplinary environment including software, optical, RF, and mechanical engineers and project managers.
    • Demonstrated skills in problem definition, data collection and analysis, generating solid conclusions and recommendations.
    • Technically creative and motivated to explore design trade-offs in the development of complex electrical and electro-mechanical systems designs.
    • Ability to multi-task, and capable of executing multiple assignments on time.

    Math/Programming Skills
    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to use MS Excel to perform calculations and interpret project results/data.   Experience with MATLAB/Simulink programming.  Desired to learn advanced simulation software (i.e. COMSOL, PZFlex, ZEMAX, LightTools)

    Analytical and Reading Skills
    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to read regulatory, technical and clinical literature and documents and extract important concepts.


    Physical Requirements
    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to perform lifting tasks of up to 30 pounds for short durations. Duties of this job may involve standing and/or walking for extended periods of time. Duties also involve daily keyboard data entry. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.


    Work Environment
    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Some light machining and prototyping activities will involve moderate noise levels (i.e. power drill) and moderate dust or debris exposure.
