  • Overview

    As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Solta Medical, the successful candidate will help create our next generation of world-leading energy-based aesthetic products. S/He will conceive, design, and bring into production products that define the industry. As a key member of Solta’s technical staff, the Senior Mechanical Engineer is expected to proactively provide innovative technical solutions and leadership based on extensive knowledge and experience of Mechanical Engineering, specifically a variety of heating and cooling systems, electromechanical assemblies, control mechanisms, and the materials/processes specific to our industry.

    The successful candidate will implement product designs for performance, innovation, reliability, and cost. S/He will not only conceptualize solutions, but follow through as an individual contributor with detailed CAD designs, prototyping, testing, supplier management, and documentation. S/He must have exceptional communication skills, experience designing injection molded plastic and sheet metal parts, and a track record of products developed from concept to market launch.

    Responsibilities

    Note:  The following are meant to be representative but not necessarily all inclusive of the duties and responsibilities for this position title.

    • Act in a leadership capacity. Provide mentoring to other technical staff within and outside of the ME group.  Provide input from concept to production on all mechanical and related design issues.
    • Design parts and assemblies (including injection-molded plastics, sheet metal, machined parts, mechanical PCB specs, cables, etc.) while considering performance, manufacturability, patient safety, regulatory requirements, quality, patents, and corporate goals.
    • Produce design documentation and specifications and input them into Solta’s PLM document control system.
    • Research and analyze design inputs such as customer requests and marketing specifications to determine product concept feasibility.
    • Interface with electrical, software, and optical engineering development resources as part of a cross-disciplinary design team.
    • Prototype designs using a variety of prototyping methodologies including SLA, RTV molds, FDM, machining, model making, gluing, and painting.
    • Support Design for Manufacturing (DFM) activities and production tooling development.
    • Stay up-to-date and follow all procedures related to this job that can affect the quality of products or services provided to our customers.
    • Support animal and laboratory studies of prototype systems for feasibility studies through production transfer

    Qualifications

     

    Experience, Education, Training, Traits:

    • BSME with 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering and a prolific track record of successful product designs
    • Highly experienced with plastic injection molding (single/multiple shot, over/insert molding, IMD, etc.), sheet metal (forming, cutting, plating, joining), materials (polymers, elastomers, ceramics, glass, metals), PCA fabrication, EMI/EMC, and cable design.
    • Extensive experience and training designing products using 3D CAD software, preferably CREO (advanced surfacing, sheet metal, assembly) and related PDM systems
    • Ability to focus on and achieve scheduled milestones, including contingency planning.
    • Knowledge of FDA Quality System and Design Control requirements and their application to projects from design inception to manufacturing release.
    • General knowledge of ESD.
    • Strong team-work and communication skills.
    • Ability to present findings and conduct design reviews in cross-functional team meetings.
    • A drive to get the job done in the face of obstacles and time constraints, and a willingness to jump in wherever needed.
    • Competent using office software including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet Explorer and Outlook.

    Language Skills

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering specifications, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. A to write reports, specifications, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.  Ability to clearly and concisely convey project accomplishments, obstacles, issues, and status to project team members.

     

    Math Skills

    Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. 

     

    Reading Skills

    Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.  Ability to read regulatory, technical and clinical literature and documents and extract important concepts.

     

    Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to perform lifting tasks of up to 30 pounds for short durations.  Duties of this job may involve standing and/or walking for extended periods of time.  Duties also involve daily keyboard data entry.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

     

    Work Environment

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.  Some light machining and prototyping activities will involve moderate noise levels (i.e. power drill) and moderate dust or debris exposure.
